Which tests should you have after casual sex?

Which infections can you catch during sex?

Some serious sexually transmitted diseases cause no symptoms for a long time. This mainly applies to viral diseases such as infection with HIV, HBV, HCV and HPV. It is difficult to protect yourself against these viruses because you will not see any signs of illness in your sexual partner. They may not know that they are infected themselves. Many people believe that choosing their partners carefully and not having too many automatically protects them. However, we must remember that when we go to bed with someone, we are indirectly having sex with all their previous partners. Of the contraceptive methods available, only condoms protect against infection. To find out whether we are infected, we need to have tests – there is no other way.

You can catch a sexually transmitted disease at any age, regardless of your sex or sexual orientation. People who have sex with casual partners and do not use barrier methods of contraception are particularly at risk. Gay people are at slightly greater risk because of the increased likelihood of small injuries to the mucous membranes.

The most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted disease is chlamydia, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. In men, it presents as non-gonococcal urethritis (it is the most common cause of this condition). Symptoms include a watery, mucus-like discharge from the urethra, itching and redness around its opening. Unlike gonorrhoea, the symptoms are less severe, and in many cases the infection causes no symptoms. Asymptomatic carriers can pass the infection on to female partners during unprotected sex.

In women, chlamydia can cause a number of serious complications. It most commonly causes inflammation of the cervix with a heavy discharge, but the most dangerous consequence of the infection is its potential to spread further up the reproductive tract. Pelvic inflammatory disease can, in turn, lead to adhesions following inflammation, blocked fallopian tubes and, ultimately, infertility.

You can catch chlamydia through unprotected sex – vaginal, but also anal and oral. It is also dangerous for newborn babies, as the infection can be transmitted during vaginal birth. The newborn’s eyes are particularly vulnerable; fortunately, preventive treatment is currently used in the form of silver nitrate drops placed in every baby’s conjunctival sac after birth.

Syphilis – another sexually transmitted disease

Another bacterial disease you can catch during unprotected sex is syphilis. Recently, an increase in the incidence of this disease has been recorded.

The cause of this sexually transmitted disease is a bacterium – Treponema pallidum. The first sign of infection is a small sore or ulcer, called a hard chancre. It usually appears two weeks after sexual contact and then disappears on its own. Unfortunately, this often makes people less vigilant and leads the infected person to dismiss the temporary symptoms. Untreated syphilis can eventually affect the heart, blood vessels and nervous system.

Bacterial vaginosis – a vaginal infection after unprotected sex

You can acquire bacterial vaginosis during sexual contact. This is a non-specific vaginal inflammation involving uncontrolled growth of anaerobic bacteria, mainly Gardnerella vaginalis. These cause an unpleasant, fishy vaginal odour, greyish-white discharge and vaginal itching. Probiotics are needed to change the vaginal microbiota, along with metronidazole.

Viral diseases and unprotected sex

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection puts women at risk of developing cervical cancer. It causes no symptoms, which is why regular cervical screening is so important. If a cervical cytology result is abnormal, further investigations are carried out to check whether the patient carries one of the cancer-causing subtypes of the virus (mainly HPV 16 and 18). The result report is issued in Polish. Although almost all diagnosed cases of cervical cancer are associated with this virus, not everyone who carries it will develop cancer.

Nevertheless, tests that detect the virus are very helpful in diagnosing cervical cancer and often determine subsequent treatment decisions. There are also HPV subtypes that cause genital warts. These are outward-growing, sometimes cauliflower-like growths in the genital area. They are caused by HPV 6 and 11. Treatment for genital warts is lengthy and involves medicines as well as freezing or laser therapy.

HPV causes oral cancer if oral sex is unprotected.

HIV – the most serious consequence of unprotected sex

HIV infection is the most serious consequence of unprotected sex. The virus attacks lymphocytes, a group of white blood cells responsible for the immune response against a range of specific diseases. In the advanced stage of the disease, the body cannot defend itself against minor infections, so even flu or pneumonia can be fatal.

In AIDS, the risk of developing cancer is higher than in the general population, also because of weakened immunity. Unprotected vaginal sex is the most common route of transmission of the virus; this risk is slightly higher for women. This is due to anatomical differences and the virus entering more easily if the vaginal mucous membranes are damaged. Anal sex poses an even greater risk because the anal mucosa is more likely to be damaged. In this situation, the receptive partner (a woman or a gay man) is more vulnerable to infection with the virus.

If you suspect HIV infection, there are centres that offer free, anonymous blood tests. You can meet a doctor there who will answer any questions. You should only attend 3 weeks after a potentially infectious contact, as the virus can only be detected by standard tests after this time. Tests for hepatitis B and C viruses – HBV and HCV – are carried out by laboratories working with the Polish portal BadamySie.pl.

Hepatitis C

An underestimated danger of unprotected sex is the risk of infection with the hepatitis C virus. There is no vaccine against this type of viral hepatitis. The disease develops silently for a long time without causing any symptoms.

Persistent hepatitis B virus infection can lead to liver damage and liver failure, progressing to severe liver damage, cirrhosis and adenocarcinoma of the liver.

Vaginal thrush after unprotected sex

Vaginal thrush is also classified as a sexually transmitted disease. It is much less dangerous than the diseases listed above, but causes unpleasant symptoms such as a heavy, cottage cheese-like discharge, vaginal itching and burning. The most common fungal infection is vaginal candidiasis, caused by the fungus Candida albicans.

Treatment involves applying topical ointments and creams containing antifungal medicines,

What if it is HIV?

The issue of HPV infection – infection with human papillomavirus – is slightly more complicated. Some types cause cervical cancer. Women should therefore have regular cervical cytology tests. Testing for the virus itself can be carried out in both sexes: a urologist collects a sample of discharge from the penis, while in women the diagnostic sample is a cervical swab taken by a gynaecologist. The sample is then checked for HPV genetic material. The current price of the test is shown on BadamySie.pl, and the test is difficult to access.

Other sexually transmitted diseases

Some sexually transmitted diseases can cause symptoms in the genital area after infection. This happens with syphilis and genital herpes. If any lesions, spots or blisters appear, you should see a dermatologist or venereologist as soon as possible; you do not need a referral to see them. You must not wait, try to treat yourself or give the symptoms time to disappear. Even if a lesion disappears, this does not mean that you are cured – but it will make it much harder for the doctor to establish the cause. Some diseases mainly show symptoms in women, while men rarely have symptoms – this does not mean that men are not infected or do not need treatment. If a woman develops discharge, itching, burning or an unpleasant vaginal odour, she should see a gynaecologist or venereologist, who will take swabs to test for bacteria and fungi.

It is very important not to ignore a suspected sexually transmitted infection. It is nothing to be ashamed of, and doctors treat sexually transmitted diseases like any other illness. Bacterial and fungal diseases can be completely cured without leaving any lasting effects, provided treatment is started promptly. Viral diseases diagnosed early can be effectively controlled, and starting treatment greatly reduces serious consequences. Whenever a sexually transmitted disease is diagnosed, we have a duty to inform our partner and previous partners. This helps prevent further spread and gives anyone who may be infected a chance of prompt treatment and recovery.

Could it be genital thrush?

Thrush is one of the most common conditions affecting women of reproductive age. It is an infection of the vagina and vulva caused by a fungus of the genus Candida. The condition is unpleasant and causes considerable discomfort. Thrush needs treatment because it will not go away on its own.

The onset is sudden, with symptoms appearing from one day to the next. Symptoms of vaginal thrush include a white, lumpy, thick discharge. This is accompanied by intense itching and burning of the genitals. The mucous membrane is red and swollen. Cracks in the skin may also appear. Itching and burning may become worse when passing urine. Pain and discomfort often occur during sex. An unpleasant vaginal odour develops.

When you use BadamySie.pl you do not pay an additional fee for blood collection at the laboratory (if you do not use the BadamySie.pl portal, a fee is always added when you buy tests in person at the clinic).

Men also develop genital thrush. However, their symptoms may be mild or absent altogether. Signs of infection include redness, itching and a coating under the foreskin that appears later.

It is important to see a doctor straight away if you notice any concerning symptoms. Thrush will only clear up with specialist treatment. Various methods of self-treatment, including herbal rinses and other remedies, not only fail to help but may make symptoms worse. When a woman is being treated, it is extremely important that her partner is treated too. Otherwise, the symptoms will disappear and then return because of reinfection from the untreated partner.

Genital thrush should not be a source of embarrassment. It is one of the most common conditions, and many factors contribute to its development. Effective specialist treatment enables a quick recovery and relief from unpleasant symptoms.
