Don’t let illness catch you by surprise. A simple blood test may be all you need.

When is it definitely a good idea to have blood tests?

If you feel tired all the time

Too many commitments and hard physical work can cause troublesome fatigue. However, if you follow a regular routine, get enough sleep and eat well, everything should return to normal after two days. If fatigue persists, have your blood tested. It is quite possible that your body is run down and fighting an infection, which would be indicated by too many white blood cells and a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate. If, on the other hand, your erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is normal, but you have too few red blood cells and a low haemoglobin level, this may indicate anaemia. The result report is issued in Polish. Anaemia often develops with heavy periods. In this case, don’t stop at a blood test. See a gynaecologist too, because fibroids can cause heavy periods. Too few red blood cells and a low haemoglobin level can manifest as hair loss. This condition indicates that you lack iron. However, do not take iron supplements without consulting your doctor.

If you are losing weight

You have no complaints about your appetite, yet you keep losing weight. You also feel on edge, tire easily and feel hot all the time, even on cool days. In this case, it is worth having not only a full blood count with a blood film, but also tests to measure thyroid-related hormone levels: thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3) and free thyroxine (FT4). Abnormal levels, whether too high or too low, together with a low cholesterol level, are a sign that your thyroid is not working properly. If your thyroid test results are normal, see your doctor. Unexplained weight loss can also be a sign of cancer.

If you have bruises and feel thirsty

If you bruise after a slight knock or a firm grip, have a blood clotting test. Also buy a glucose test, because a tendency to bruise can be one of the symptoms of diabetes. You should do the same if you constantly feel thirsty. This usually indicates poor glucose tolerance, especially if, in addition to thirst, you feel weak and often have infections of the mucous membranes, such as oral thrush. An excessively high blood serum glucose level is usually a sign that you have diabetes.

If you like fatty foods

You are overweight, but still keep reaching for various treats, especially fatty meats and processed meats. Make sure you have a lipid profile (cholesterol) test. An abnormal test result means a serious risk of developing atherosclerosis and heart problems. Losing your waistline, known as abdominal obesity, also indicates a predisposition to heart disease and atherosclerosis. Your body takes on an apple shape. In this situation, have your blood tested as soon as possible. High cholesterol and triglyceride levels increase the risk of disease.

If your joints are troubling you

Joint pain can be caused not only by degenerative changes, but can also accompany bacterial and viral infections. It is then worth having a full blood count and checking the level of a substance called C-reactive protein. If it is above the normal range, and ESR also exceeds the acceptable values, acute inflammation in the body may be suspected, and finding the cause of feeling unwell requires more detailed tests. Recurrent throat inflammation should also draw your attention. It may signal diseases affecting the whole body, such as immune disorders or leukaemia. In this case, the blood test must include a blood film. The characteristic appearance of lymphocytes will reveal what is happening in your body.

If you drink alcohol

One glass of wine a day is good for your health, but stronger alcoholic drinks, especially when consumed in large quantities, adversely affect the condition and function of your liver. A sign that your liver is struggling is the characteristic yellowing of the whites of your eyes and skin, along with dark urine. In this situation, the bilirubin level is usually measured in blood serum (a healthy liver excretes it in bile). The presence of liver enzymes is also checked. A slight deviation from the normal range indicates liver damage, while a significant deviation indicates progressive cirrhosis. Excessively low levels of proteins (prothrombin and albumin) suggest impaired liver function. The presence of ammonia, meanwhile, indicates severe liver damage. The same symptoms and damage to this organ are sometimes caused by taking painkillers too frequently. These medicines, even if sold without a prescription, can be addictive and damage the liver. To establish whether this has happened, liver enzyme levels should be tested – aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT).
