NiŚOZ (nocna i świąteczna opieka zdrowotna – night and holiday healthcare) provides medical and nursing care outside clinic opening hours: Monday to Friday from 18:00–8:00 and around the clock on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. There are currently 49 centres in Lesser Poland Voivodeship, with the largest numbers in: Krakow (9), Tarnów (2), Tuchów and Niepołomice. When to use night and holiday healthcare

NiŚOZ is intended for people who develop a sudden illness or whose health deteriorates in a way that is not life-threatening but cannot wait until their clinic opens: fever, infection, a sore throat, earache, abdominal pain without warning signs, vomiting and diarrhoea, a flare-up of a chronic condition, or the need for an injection prescribed by a doctor or a dressing change. There are no catchment-area restrictions and no referral is required: you can visit any centre in Poland, regardless of where you live or which clinic you are registered with. The duty doctor provides consultations in person, by telephone and, where medically justified, at the patient’s home. You need an identity document for your visit; insurance is checked through the eWUŚ system.

If there is an immediate threat to life (loss of consciousness, seizures, severe chest pain, sudden breathlessness, extensive burns, vomiting blood or signs of a stroke), call 112 or 999, not a NiŚOZ centre. The free NFZ (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia – Polish National Health Fund) patient information helpline, Telefoniczna Informacja Pacjenta, on 800 190 590 operates around the clock and can help you find the nearest centre, but does not provide medical advice. Night and holiday healthcare centres do not carry out routine laboratory testing: the duty doctor assesses the patient’s condition and recommends the next steps, while blood tests (full blood count with differential, CRP, Glucose – laboratory test, electrolytes, liver function tests, urine testing) usually need to be done the following day. You do not need to wait for an appointment at your clinic or have a referral: you can buy tests online at BadamySie.pl and have them done in the morning at your nearest ALAB, Synevo or ETER-MED collection point, then access the results online the same day or the following day and show them to your GP. The result report is issued in Polish.
