It performs many important functions in the body, and its level, measured during a biochemical blood test, allows doctors to assess your health and helps them make a diagnosis if needed. Calcium in the body is found in the blood (1%) and bones (99%), but calcium is not just about strong bones. This element regulates the nervous system, improving the transmission of nerve impulses, and, above all, controls the blood-clotting process. Calcium concentration depends on the amount in your diet, the body’s ability to release it from the bones, how much is absorbed in the intestine and how much is excreted in the urine. The most important hormones in this process are parathyroid hormone (PTH), produced by the parathyroid glands, and calcitonin, secreted by thyroid cells. They determine how much of the calcium consumed in food our body can absorb, how much it excretes and how much it releases from the bones. Vitamin D3, deficiency of which is common at Poland’s latitude, is also essential for this process.

The reference range for calcium (Ca) is 2.1-2.6 mmol/l (8.5-10.5 mg/dl)

Symptoms of increased calcium levels in the blood (known as hypercalcaemia):

impaired kidney function: this causes excessive urination, dehydration and increased calcium excretion in the urine, which leads to kidney stones,

gastrointestinal problems: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, stomach or duodenal ulcers, acute pancreatitis, and often a metallic taste in the mouth,

cardiovascular symptoms: hypertension, a rapid heartbeat and arrhythmia (an irregular heartbeat),

central nervous system symptoms: headache, drowsiness and even coma.

neuromuscular symptoms: muscle weakness and temporary paralysis of the facial muscles.

You can purchase individual blood tests and blood test packages designed by Polish specialists at BadamySie.pl and have them done at the laboratory you select during purchase, using the confirmation emailed to you just moments after the transaction.

If elevated blood calcium levels persist for a long time, this can lead to deposits of calcium and phosphate in organs and tissues (the cornea, kidneys, stomach lining, connective tissue surrounding the joints and blood vessel walls). This is a set of dangerous symptoms, including impaired consciousness, severe abdominal pain, vomiting and nausea, excessive urination leading to dehydration, heart rhythm disturbances (ECG changes may even resemble those seen in a heart attack) and coma.

The causes of hypercalcaemia (an elevated calcium concentration in the blood) largely depend on the hormone that regulates calcium and phosphate balance, known as parathyroid hormone (PTH):

1) PTH-dependent causes:

primary hyperparathyroidism – mainly caused by a parathyroid adenoma, multiple adenomas or cancer;

paraneoplastic syndromes (associated with cancer) are a group of symptoms that may occur several months or even years before the cancer itself. They call for particularly thorough diagnostic investigations and vigilance for cancer. Tumour tissue can secrete PTH, leading to hypercalcaemia. This most commonly occurs in breast, ovarian and kidney cancer.

2) PTH-independent causes:

cancers – not only through the paraneoplastic effect mentioned above, but primarily through the osteolytic (bone-destroying) effect caused by bone metastases from various cancers (mainly breast, lung and kidney cancer, multiple myeloma, lymphomas and leukaemias);

vitamin D toxicity – as a result of taking an overdose of a vitamin supplement or of vitamin D production by granulomas (in sarcoidosis) or lymphomas;

use of thiazide diuretics;

prolonged immobilisation – this leads to increased release of calcium from the bones.

Hypercalcaemia (an excessively high blood calcium level) is caused by hyperparathyroidism and cancer in 90% of cases.
