These are the situations covered by Ni\u015aOZ (nocna i \u015bwi\u0105teczna opieka zdrowotna \u2014 night and holiday healthcare), funded by NFZ (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia \u2014 Polish National Health Fund) and available without a referral in every voivodeship. There are currently <strong>569 Ni\u015aOZ service points<\/strong> in Poland. During these hours, the Ni\u015aOZ doctor and nurse take over primary healthcare duties: they provide consultations, issue electronic prescriptions and electronic sick notes, give injections and carry out nursing procedures ordered by a doctor, and make home visits where justified. Outside these hours, you should contact your own POZ (podstawowa opieka zdrowotna \u2014 primary healthcare) clinic.<\/p>\n<h2>When to attend and when to call 112<\/h2>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Attend Ni\u015aOZ<\/th>\n<th>Call 112 or 999 (emergency services)<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>fever, respiratory tract infection, sore throat, earache, sinus pain<\/td>\n<td>loss of consciousness, seizures<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain without warning signs<\/td>\n<td>severe chest pain, sudden breathlessness<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>a flare-up of a chronic condition (hypertension, diabetes, asthma) that is not life-threatening<\/td>\n<td>signs of a stroke: a drooping corner of the mouth, slurred speech, limb weakness<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>back pain, joint pain, urinary tract infection<\/td>\n<td>extensive burns, serious injury, massive bleeding, vomiting blood<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>a dressing change, an injection ordered by a doctor<\/td>\n<td>severe allergic reaction, poisoning<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Szpitalny oddzia\u0142 ratunkowy (SOR, hospital emergency department) and izba przyj\u0119\u0107 (hospital admissions unit) are for emergencies; attending with a cold lengthens the queue for patients with life-threatening conditions and usually means waiting for many hours.<\/p>\n<h2>Rules worth remembering<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No catchment areas:<\/strong> you can attend any service point in the country, regardless of your home address or the clinic where you are registered.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Without a referral and free of charge<\/strong> for insured people; entitlement is checked through the eWU\u015a system, and you need an identity document (a PESEL number is sufficient for a child).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Telephone consultations:<\/strong> most facilities offer advice by telephone; it is worth calling before setting off, especially with a young child.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Home visits:<\/strong> only where medically justified (a bedridden patient); the doctor on duty decides.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paediatrician:<\/strong> not available at every service point; the voivodeship directories indicate where a paediatrician is available (Masovia); elsewhere, it is worth asking by telephone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Information:<\/strong> the free Telefoniczna Informacja Pacjenta NFZ (NFZ Patient Information Helpline), 800 190 590, operates round the clock and can help you find the nearest service point, but does not provide medical advice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dentist:<\/strong> emergency dental care has separate duty hours (19:00\u20137:00 on weekdays, round the clock at weekends and on public holidays); NFZ publishes the directory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>After your visit: tests that night healthcare cannot provide<\/h2>\n<p>The doctor on duty does not have access to a laboratory and does not order routine tests funded by NFZ. If they recommend a full blood count, CRP, glucose, electrolytes, liver function tests or a urine test, the quickest option is to have them done privately in the morning, without a referral: buy online, have your sample collected at one of over 800 ALAB, Synevo and ETER-MED collection points, and receive your result online the same or the next day to show your GP.
